Types of Gas the Audi A3 Can Take [ANSWERED]

Types of Gas the Audi A3 Can Take [ANSWERED]

If you’re deadset on the Audi A3 as your luxurious Euro fuel sipper of choice, then you better make sure that you’re putting in fuel that’s fit for its German palate (or fuel system).

Whether it’s gasoline/petrol or diesel, choosing the right fuel blend for your A3 keeps the knocking sounds away as well as potential angry tailgaters that can mistake you for a left-lane hogger.

The good news is that discussing fuel types for Audis, BMWs, Mercedes, and the like is second nature to us, so let’s have your A3 purring like a kitten with the right type of gas right now!

What type of gas can an Audi A3 take?

The Audi A3 is designed to take gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87 AKI (91 RON), though the manufacturer recommends using premium 91-octane fuel (95 RON) for the best performance.

2-liter I4 diesel models of the Audi A3 are specified to take ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) #2.

What type of gas can an Audi A3 take

Audi likes to be consistent with fuel requirements or recommendations for its fleet of vehicles. Whether we’re talking about the A3 or even its Q5 luxury SUV, you’re bound to see a lot of similarities between Audi models and their fuel of choice.

Simply put, the Audi A3 is designed to take gasoline with a minimum octane of at least 87 AKI (Anti-Knock Index), which is around 91 RON (Research Octane Number) for the rest of the world.

However, according to Audi, the recommended fuel grade/octane for optimum performance would be 91-octane gasoline, which is a “premium” grade in most places. This is equivalent to about 95 RON in other countries.

As for Audi A3 diesel models sold in North America, namely the 2-liter “TDI” variants, they are designed to specifically take ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) #2.

But aside from fuel grades and octane ratings, it’s also worth talking about which specific types of fuel blends, additives, and even ethanol percentages are compatible with the Audi A3, so read on!

Audi A3 Fuel Requirements by Generation and Engine Option

The 2nd to 4th-gen Audi A3 requires at least 87-octane gasoline for its gas engine options, while 2-liter diesel models require ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) #2.

1st-gen European Audi A3 models have no info for their required fuel octane online, thus it’s recommended to check their owner’s manuals.

1.8L 20V Inline-4 (I4)Gasoline/Petrol
1.8L 20V Inline-4 (I4) TurboGasoline/Petrol
1.9L 8V TDI DieselDiesel Fuel

The 1st-generation Audi A3 with the “8L” code was only released for the European market, with the UK being one of the first places to receive the German hatchback outside of its home country’s soil in 1996.

Thus, there’s not a lot of info to be seen in regards to its minimum fuel requirement, with both the 1.6 and 1.8-liter I4 engines only being indicated to use gasoline or petrol.

Even info concerning the 1.9-liter I4 diesel variant’s exact standards for diesel fuel is scarce, as fuel standards were a lot different in the late 90s to early 2000s.

If you manage to get a 1st-gen Audi A3 outside of the European market, then we highly recommend checking its owner’s manual for the recommended octane for its fuel.

Be sure to take note of any differences in measuring octane ratings, as octane for the European market will be indicated in RON rather than the US’ “AKI”.

The 2nd-gen Audi A3 “8P” was first released in 2004 but then eventually came to North American shores in 2005 for the 2006 model year.

Models include a 2-liter 4-cylinder “FSI” (Fuel Stratified Injection) engine and a bigger and more powerful 3.2-liter VR6 (yes, a VR6 and not a V6) equipped with Audi’s “Quattro” all-wheel-drive system.

Both of these engines can run on regular 87-octane gasoline at a minimum, though the German automaker recommends premium 91-octane fuel to get the best performance out of them both.

A 2-liter “TDI” (Turbocharged Direct Injection) diesel engine option also made it to the US market, for which it was then specified to run on ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) #2, which has the lowest sulfur content out of any diesel fuel available today (15 ppm).

2.0L TDI Inline-4 (I4) DieselUltra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) #2

3rd-generation Audi A3 “8V” models were offered between 2012 and 2020 with sharper design cues and a revamped set of engine options to choose from.

A turbocharged 1.8-liter TFSI I4 was offered as the base engine for the US market, which made 170 hp and can run on regular 87-octane fuel. But as usual, Audi recommends switching to at least 91-octane fuel for the best performance figures.

No VR6-equipped model this time around, as a 2-liter TFSI I4 was also offered starting from the 2015 model year, which produces 217 hp when using 91-octane fuel though regular 87-octane fuel can also be used albeit having slightly reduced performance.

The 3rd-gen Audi A3 is also the first generation of the German executive car to offer a hybrid power plant in the form of the 1.4-liter TFSI I4, which is fitted on the “e-tron” model.

Fuel requirements for the 1.4-liter hybrid remain identical to the other gas-powered engines, with 87-octane being the minimum and 91-octane being the recommended to extract every ounce of horsepower it has.

As for the lone 2-liter TDI 4-cylinder diesel offered for North America, the preferred fuel of choice is still ultra-low sulfur diesel #2 (ULSD #2).

4th-Generation Audi A3 (8Y) (2020 to 2024/Present)

2.0L TFSI Inline-4 (I4) Turbo(Quattro) 87-Octane Gasoline (Regular) (91 Octane Recommended)

The 4th and latest generation of the Audi A3 bears the “8Y” design code and was initially unveiled in 2020 with even sharper angles and aggressive styling as well as a plethora of innovative features for both the exterior and interior.

However, the US-released model is offered with only one engine option, the turbocharged 2-liter TFSI inline-4, which now makes 201 hp, is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission, and paired with either FWD or Audi’s “Quattro” AWD system.

As with the previous-gen engines, the 4th-gen Audi A3’s 2-liter TFSI I4 can be filled up with regular 87-octane gasoline, but opting for premium 91-octane fuel will unlock its full potential when stepping on the throttle.

Does the Audi A3 need premium fuel?

The Audi A3 does not require premium fuel, as the manufacturer only requires a minimum of regular 87-octane fuel for the model. However, premium 91-octane fuel is still recommended for the most optimum engine performance.

Audi A3 Octane Rating

The Audi A3 is designed to take gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87 AKI (91 RON). However, Audi recommends 91 AKI (95 RON) premium fuel to achieve the best performance and fuel economy.

Fuels lower than 87-octane should be avoided for the Audi A3 to not cause engine knock and damage.

Types of Gasoline/Fuel That Can Be Used in an Audi A3

Gas/petrol Audi A3 models can be filled up with TOP TIER detergent gasoline, up to 10% ethanol blends (E10) for 2nd-gen models, and up to 15% ethanol blends (E15) for 3rd and 4th-gen models.

Diesel Audi A3 models can use ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) #2 and up to 5% biodiesel (B5).

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline

In regards to recommended fuel types, the Audi A3 owner’s manual encourages the use of TOP TIER detergent gasoline, which is unleaded gasoline blended with high-quality detergent additives to keep your engine in top condition.

Compared to other fuel brands, TOP TIER fuel has a higher concentration of detergents, a blend that has proven effective in safe in cleaning your engine and protecting it from carbon buildup.

While the lowest octane rating for TOP TIER fuel is already at 87-octane, which would suffice for the Audi A3, you’ll be able to get the best performance out of your engine when opting for at least the 91-octane variant.

Should you choose TOP TIER gas for your Audi A3, then all you need to do is check your local gas station pumps for the green “TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline” logo.

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline-2

Up to 10% or 15% Ethanol Blends (E10/E15)

Up to 10% or 15% Ethanol Blends (E10E15)

The majority of today’s gasoline is mixed in with an oxygenate called “ethanol”, which is ethyl alcohol derived from recycled starch and oils that serve as a natural octane booster and reduce emissions from gasoline.

The most common ethanol blends are E10 (10% ethanol) and E15 (15% ethanol), and depending on your Audi A3’s generation or year model, you may be limited to either 10% or 15% ethanol by volume.

2nd-generation Audi A3 models (until 2012) were compatible with up to 10% ethanol blends (E10), whereas starting from 2015, all 3rd and 4th-generation models were made compatible with up to 15% ethanol blends (E15).

Due to ethanol’s tendency to attract moisture, you should avoid putting fuel that contains above 15% ethanol since it can corrode and damage your engine and fuel system components that were not built to handle ethanol blends over that limit.

The Audi A3 and other vehicles limited to only 15% ethanol can be considered non-Flex-Fuel Vehicles (non-FFVs), which will have them equipped with a regular black gas cap instead of a yellow “E85/Flex-Fuel” one.

Up to 10% or 15% Ethanol Blends (E10E15)-2

UItra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) #2 (Diesel Models)

UItra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) #2 (Diesel Models)

There’s only one type of fuel that Audi advises to use for its diesel-powered A3 models in the US, and that is ultra-low sulfur diesel #2 or “ULSD #2” for short.

North American Audi A3 models with the 2-liter “TDI” 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine are specifically designed to run on ULSD #2 per the ASTM D975, which is the standard specification for diesel fuel in the US.

Ultra-low sulfur diesel #2 has the lowest sulfur content of all diesel fuels sold in the US at about 15 ppm (parts per million), which gives rise to cleaner-burning diesel fuel fit for today’s modern engines.

Up to 5% Biodiesel (B5) (Diesel Models)

Up to 5% Biodiesel (B5) (Diesel Models)

Aside from the standard diesel fuel, the Audi A3 2-liter TDI model is also compatible with some amount of biodiesel fuel, but Audi is pretty particular about using this type of fuel.

For starters, you’re only limited to 5% biodiesel (B5) at most for the TDI engines. Secondly, biodiesel can do several undesirable things to your A3’s engine oil, especially if you go over the allowable amount:

  • Increased chance of fuel mixing with the oil (seepage)
  • Increased oil level due to diesel seepage
  • Increased oil consumption
  • Reduced engine oil quality

According to the Audi A3’s owner’s manual, diesel models may experience oil consumption of up to 1/2 a quart every 600 miles (or about half a liter per 1,000 km) when using biodiesel.

Hence, while biodiesel is known for its renewability and cleaner burn due to being made out of recycled vegetable oils and fats, it can be pretty demanding in terms of maintenance when used for the Audi A3.

Types of Gasoline/Fuel to Avoid for the Audi A3

Avoid filling up the Audi A3 with gasoline containing MMT, E85/Flex-Fuel, ethanol blends higher than 15% content, and any fuel with a lower octane rating than 87 AKI (91 RON).

Gasoline Containing MMT (Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl)

Gasoline Containing MMT (Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl)

Gasoline that contains the manganese-based additive called “MMT”, despite its octane-boosting benefits, has several downsides to it that make it not advisable for most vehicles on the road, including the Audi A3.

While there is no mention of MMT in the owner’s manual for the A3, Audi doesn’t generally recommend using fuel additives unless it’s the detergent additives already included in TOP TIER fuel.

As for the negative effects of using gasoline with MMT, this can include increased toxic emissions, premature fouling of spark plugs, and potential damage to your emission system components.

E85/Flex-Fuel and Ethanol Blends Higher than 15%

E85Flex-Fuel and Ethanol Blends Higher than 15%

E85 or “Flex-Fuel” is not compatible with any Audi A3 model, as none of its engine options are capable of taking fuel with over 15% ethanol content.

In contrast, E85 can contain up to 85% pure ethanol and only 15% gasoline, so it’s pretty easy to understand why it shouldn’t be used in an Audi A3 unless you install an aftermarket Flex-Fuel kit on it.

Using Flex-Fuel or any type of fuel with over 15% ethanol (e.g. E20, E30, E50) in the Audi A3 can corrode and damage the fuel system that’s not designed to take it.

To distinguish a Flex-Fuel vehicle (FFV) from one that isn’t, you can look for a Flex-Fuel badge on a particular model as well as a special yellow fuel cap that has “E85” printed on it.
